In 2003, the World History of Science Online (WHSO) was established as a project of the Commission on Bibliography and Documentation (CBD) of the International Union of History and Philosophy of Science/Division of History of Science and Technology (IUHPS/DHST). It was proposed as a free resource for scholars worldwide to provide information about databases of bibliographical and archival sources in the field of history of science and technology. Analysis revealed that little was publicly documented about the history of the ‘history of science’ in a structured manner. At a meeting in Athens in 2012 the Board of the Commission on Bibliography and Documentation decided to focus work in 2013 on looking back to map out the history of the ‘history of science (and technology)’ with a special focus on the history of science bibliography. This project was designed to complement and work with redevelopment work being undertaken on the Isis Current Bibliography of the History of Science which is also working towards an enhanced open online interface.
