This site is the official home of the
Commission on Bibliography and Documentation (CBD) of the
Division of History of Science and Technology (DHST)
International Union of History and Philosophy of Science (IUHPS)
The Commission on Bibliography and Documentation was established originally as two separate activities, a Commission on Bibliography and a Commission on Documentation, under the IUHPS Division of History of Science. The two Commissions were merged in 1993 and Professor Rod Home elected as the inaugural President. In 2001 the Division of History of Science changed its name to the Division of History of Science and Technology.
The purpose of the Commission on Bibliography and Documentation is
- to foster the development and utilisation of bibliographic and archival documentation to assist historians in their study of science and technology, and
- to extend knowledge of the archives and bibliography of the history science and technology to the wider community.
The work of the Commission on Bibliography and Documentation is directed by a Board which is appointed for a four year term that coincides with the International Congresses of the Division of History of Science and Technology. Recent congresses have been held in Beijing – 2005, Budapest – 2009, and in Manchester – 2013.
The Commission identifies and pursues projects that support its purpose including prizes and awards. The Commission seeks funds from a range of agencies and funding bodies to support its projects as opportunities arise.
